Governors’ Camp

Created in 1972, Governors’ Camp was the first permanent, luxury tented camp in Africa, nestled in the forest along the winding banks of the Mara River - its waters teeming with birdlife, hippo and crocodile. It occupies the best wildlife viewing location in the heart of the Masai Mara National Reserve and since the very early days, it is still Africa’s best. 

The entire camp is crafted from canvas while some of the thirty tents have views out across the open plains’, others offer a bird’s eye viewing of the river and all the interaction taking place below. The rooms are of the classic safari style, each with ensuite bathrooms and private verandahs. Many guests love to simply sit back on their own private deck with a drink in hand and watch the resident warthogs grazing on the lawn.

A main dining and bar area are the center focus, a great place to meet other travellers and reminisce on the day’s sightings while endearing families of banded mongooses scurry by. A large deck overlooks the river, providing a wonderful space to watch animals drinking at the water’s edge. Sometimes, guests will have to make way for elephants who love to stroll directly through the camp during mealtimes - a highlight of any stay!

This camp is extremely well located, in an area that is widely considered to offer a stellar wildlife experience amongst stunning scenery. Game drives are in custom-built 4x4 Land Cruisers - the experience led by highly trained and knowledgeable guides. Visits to the local Masai village and primary school can be organised for those who wish. Exciting hot air balloon safaris are available at an additional cost, from neighbouring Little Governors’ Camp.
