Lewa Wilderness

Lewa Wilderness | Meru

Lewa Wilderness is an original family home steeped in history and immersed in pristine wilderness that is the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy. From as early as 1922, the Craig family ran Lewa Downs as a cattle ranch where wildlife and livestock was encouraged to co-exist and in 1972, the first of many guests were welcome to visit this magical region. As a result of the large scale poaching of the 1970s and 1980s, a rhino sanctuary was created to protect Kenya’s last remaining rhinos; since then the population has grown from a horrifying initial number of just 15, to 169.

The grounds are an oasis of green lawn, beautiful trees and colourful bougainvillea, in an otherwise arid landscape. The birdlife is incredible and the starry nights impressive. Game viewing is on Lewa - one of Kenya’s most successful conservation stories, where an abundance of game including rare endemic species of the area - are a true testament to the long term and ongoing efforts of wildlife protection in the region.

Today, the lodge is run by Will and Emma Craig and their fantastic team of staff who will ensure that a ‘home away from home’ experience is remembered by all.
