Mara Plains Camp

As only one of five other camps to be found in the Mara’s Olare Motorogi Conservancy, and hidden away amongst thick forest on a bend in the Ntiakitiak River, Great Plains Camp offers a hugely private and secluded stay. The design and decor is inspired by the cultures and heritage of East Africa, where the lavish yet comfortable atmosphere compliments the surrounding wilderness. 

Built by National Geographic Explorers-in-Residence Dereck and Beverly Joubert and their partners at Great Plains Conservation, the camp is beautiful and stylish. Think large, intricately carved wooden doors from the island of Lamu and  accents of deep red to honor the local Masai culture mixed with colonial influences of a bygone era. All seven of the luxury tents are elevated with charming wooden floors and billowing canvas sides. The camp is accessed by a short but exciting walk over a bridge suspended above the river, whereupon you are greeted by an endless horizon of flat-topped Acacia woodland.

From Mara Plains you can lose yourself within 100,000 acres of the private conservancy which is prime habitat for a multitude of wildlife species and birds - as well as unfettered access to the Mara Reserve. The key to your wildlife experience at Mara Plains is not in the annual Great Migration, but in the hidden gems along the way. Enjoy early morning, afternoon or night game drives, authentic cultural visits and hot air balloon safaris across the Mara River (at an additional cost).
