Richard's River Camp

Richard's River Camp | Masai Mara

Richard’s River Camp is perfectly located on the banks of the Njageteck River in Mara North Conservancy, and was initially established as Richard and Liz’s ‘home away from home’ in 2006 when their son was born in 2006.

There are just seven tents including one family tent (which comprises two rooms interconnected by a central living area). Each tent is individually furnished, spacious and custom designed to allow for good airflow during the midday heat. The main mess area is inviting, comfortable and decorated with beautiful ornaments, collectables and East Africa inspired, heavyweight coffee-table books. The result is a casually luxurious camp, combining exceptional wildlife with a contemporary ‘Out Of Africa Experience’. Given its small size, the camp is ideal for close groups or large families travelling together.

The surrounding area is a mix of open, grassy plains and acacia woodland that follows the course of the river. The area is home to many of the Mara’s plains game such as elephant, impala, giraffe, buffalo, warthog and zebra. Mara North Conservancy has one of the highest densities of big cat populations, not just in the Mara, but in Kenya as a whole. There is a resident lion pride that occasionally wanders into the camp at night, while a walk up to the active hyena den located behind the camp, makes for lovely morning or afternoon activity.

Conservation & Community

For the last three generations, the Roberts families have played an integral part for conservation in Kenya. In 2011 Richard and Liz founded the Mara Elephant Project, which is instrumental in human-wildlife conflict mitigation and anti-poaching through the collaring, monitoring and tracking of elephants. With a dedicated team, MEP is achieving great results in reducing elephant poaching; please see the MEP Facebook page ‘Mara Elephant Project’ for current updates.
