Sand River

On a carefully chosen location - a picturesque and secluded bank of the Sand River in Kenya’s Masai Mara, sits Elewana’s Sand River Camp. This is the perfect destination for year-round game viewing and the annual Great Migration of wildebeest and other plains game. 

The elegant design, style and interiors replicates the heyday of the few exclusive permanent tented camps of the 1920’s - a classic era of African adventures. The sixteen canvas tents, including one family unit, are all well positioned to maximise views of both the river and the Mara’s open wilderness. The camp is split in two separate but adjoining campsites, with an equal number of tents on each side, both providing its own dining and living areas, thereby creating an increased sense of intimacy and privacy.

Sand River is tucked away in a secluded area of the Masai Mara National Reserve, far away from other camps and quite literally on the migration route which means that guests are often able to watch all the action of wildebeest and zebra thundering back and forth across the river - from the comfort of their tents! The surrounding area is a beautiful combination of dramatic rocks, grassy plains and riverine forest - home to a plethora of bird species and roaming wildlife. 

Spend your days game driving through pristine wilderness, sundowners and bush meals at idyllic settings, cultural experiences, humbling visits to a local school or simply lazing by the pool and soaking up the sun. For a once-in-a-lifetime experience, take a hot air balloon safari across the Masai Mara and land on the open plains for a delicious breakfast (additional cost).
