Tanzania | Kilimanjaro & Arusha

Kilimanjaro & Arusha Overview

Arusha is considered the gateway town to Tanzania's northern safari circuit and for treks to the top of Mt Kilimanjaro. Arusha has its own national park, home to its mascot, the black and white colobus monkey. Mt Meru dominates the near vicinity, with the magnificent snow-capped Kilimanjaro in the distance. This is certainly coffee country, with some charming plantation style guest houses that offer guests the opportunity to experience the processes and flavours first hand.

Kilimanjaro is one of the world's most accessible high summits and it is also the largest free standing mountain in the world. The vast majority of adventurers reach the crater rim with little more than a walking stick, suitable attire and determination. Climbers who reach Uhuru Point or Gillman's Point on the lip of the crater, will have earned their climbing certificates and their unique memories.

Kilimanjaro offers diverse landscapes and climates ranging from the tropics to the Arctic. Verdant montane forest frequented by elephant, leopard and Cape buffalo gives way to moorland and heathlands followed by highland barrens and finally the snow and glaciers of the ice capped Kibo peak.

With seven official trekking routes to conquer Africa’s tallest peak, we recommend the Machame Route. Whilst it is the steepest route, it is also the most scenic.
