Great Rift Valley Overview
The Great Rift Valley is comprised of a series of contiguous geographic trenches, approximately 7,000 kilometres in total length, that runs from the Beqaa Valley in Lebanon which is in Asia to Mozambique in Southeast Africa and is made up of two branches; the Eastern Rift and the Western Rift.
The lakes of the Kenyan Rift Valley are a UNESCO World Heritage sight, with Lake Bogoria being home to the world’s largest population of lessee flamingos. The region is also renowned with Geologists and known as the “cradle of humanity” following the discoveries of million year old homonin skeletons. In addition to the vast lake systems, the region supports a rich volcanic soil, volcanic outcrops, swamps, open waters, waterfalls, geysers, hot springs, open grasslands and forests.
The region is also home to a large array of wildlife including hippo, giraffe, lion, cheetah, black rhino and some of the largest bird diversity concentrations in the world.
