Lake Manyara Overview

Lake Manyara National Park is renowned for its tree climbing lions, the soda ash lake that attracts thousands of pink flamingos, one of Tanzania’s largest elephant populations and breathtaking scenery. The national park covers 325 km2 of wildlife, forest, arid land and indeed, the soda lake.

The lake is subject to high levels of evaporation and almost disappears during the dry season between June and October. Between November and May however, it covers up to 200km2 and hosts thousands of flamingos, a large population of hippo and upwards of 400 bird species.

Many safari guests enjoy a day trip to Manyara as part of a wider itinerary and we would recommend staying for at least one night to fully enjoy the sundowners, stunning vistas and of course, the flamingos!

For nature lovers, the Great Migration takes place from July to December (typically) but there is great game viewing all year round.
