Tanzania | Mahale, Katavi Tanganyike

Mahale Mountains

The Mahale Mountain range offers visitors the opportunity to experience close up encounters with one of the worlds largest wild chimpanzee populations, offering a truly premium chimpanzee experience. Situated on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, the national park spans 1,650 km2.

Katavi

Accessible only by light aircraft, the Katavi National Park is home to the largest herds of buffalo on the planet and is a relatively untouched wilderness paradise, situated in the western area of Tanzania.

The park boasts a wonderful array of habitats, which range from flood plains of thick reeds and dense waterways that teem with hippo and crocodile to woodlands, open grasslands, forests and pristine seasonal lakes.

Lake Tanganyika

The world’s longest, second oldest and second deepest fresh-water lake; Lake Tanganyika laps the shores of Tanzania, Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Zambia.

Tanganyika teems with at least 500 different species of fish - the greatest diversity of freshwater fish found anywhere on the planet. Watersports and a warm year long climate help to make this an excellent alternative to a traditional “beach” safari in East Africa.

When is the best time to visit?

Tanzania is great to visit all year round however there are typically heavy rains from mid March to late May.

From December to mid-March, the days are hot and sunny, usually with clear skies.

For nature lovers, the Great Migration takes place from July to December (typically) but there is great game viewing all year round.
