Nairobi Overview

Nairobi offers visitors the opportunity to engage with wildlife, enjoy a vibrant nightlife and food scene, local markets or the ability to relax in old world, leafy suburbs. The original safari capital of Africa, Nairobi now lays claim to being the only capital city in the world with its own national park. The name Nairobi comes from the Masai phrase Enkare Nairobi, which translates to "cool water", a reference to the Nairobi River which flows through the city.

Nairobi is also home to stunning leafy suburbs such as Langata and Karen which have maintained the traditional Nairobi charm with mature trees and elaborate gardens. In addition to the suburbs and national park, Nairobi hosts a thriving business hub with skyscrapers and business districts where large multinational corporations now have a presence. The city is also home to the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust elephant orphanage which is a fantastic place to visit and even adopt a baby elephant. In Nairobi you can also hand feed the endangered Rothschild giraffe at the AFEW Giraffe Centre allowing you to get up close and personal with these stunning creatures! If you have more time in Nairobi, The Karen Blitzen Museum is definitely worth a visit. For gift shops, Langata Links are a popular choice.

Boutique hotels and luxury 5 star international hotel chains offer fantastic accommodation options in this bustling city. Two favourite restaurants in Nairobi include Cultiva and the famous Talisman, both of which are located in the Karen region. Karen is also home to the Dojo Wellness Centre & Gym which is a nice option if you have the time. It is located adjacent to the Talisman but also has a nice, healthy cafe onsite.
