Samburu Overview
The Samburu ecosystem is situated north of Laikipia and Mount Kenya and encompasses the Samburu National Reserve, Buffalo Springs Reserve, Kalama Conservancy, West Gate Community Area, Makupurat-Gotu Conservancy and Shaba National Reserve. The region is the traditional homeland of the pastoral and nomadic Samburu people.
This region is popular with visitors seeking unspoiled wilderness in remote locations. Open savannahs, sacred mountains, volcanic rocks and the Esawo Nyrio river attract hundreds of species of bird in addition to cheetah, leopard, crocodile, lion, buffalo, elephant, hippo. The rare long necked gerenuk, Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe and Beisa oryx can also be seen in Samburu.

Samburu is good to visit all year round however there are typically heavy rains from mid March to late May. From December to mid-March, the days are hot and sunny, usually with clear skies.
