Tanzania | Serengeti & Grumetti Reserve

Overview

The Serengeti is one of the most famous parks in Africa and is synonymous with wildlife and classic African landscapes. It is Tanzania's oldest park and a Unesco World Heritage site. It is also home to the spectacular migration of over 1 million wildebeest and zebra and offers excellent wildlife viewing throughout the year. It covers over 14,750km2, categorised into four main areas with wildlife as diverse as the stunning landscapes it encapsulates.

The Grumeti Reserve was created by the Tanzanian government in 1994 in order to protect the path of the annual wildebeest migration and the indigenous biodiversity of this vast and important ecosystem. The Signitia Collection of luxury camps provide a luxurious and exclusive East African safari experience, working closely with conservationists and local communities to protect this area of huge importance in terms of wildlife.

Stretching across to Lake Victoria, the Western Corridor is a remote, less frequented area of the national park famed for the incredible river crossings of the Grumeti River during the Great Migration between May and July. A huge valley bordered by hills that ends in Lake Victoria, the Western Corridor is comprised of open savanna, woodlands, floodplains and riverine forest which are home to a great diversity of wildlife, including elephant, giraffe, hippo, giant Nile crocodiles, rare Colobus monkeys and the localised kongoni antelope all year round.

The Serengeti Plains are made up of vast grassland plains in the south and are host to the birthing season of the migratory wildebeest from December to May along with large populations of zebra, gazelle, hartebeest, topi, buffalo and waterbuck.  The landscape is dotted with ‘Kopjes’ (large granite outcrops) offering vantage points for predators.

The Northern Serengeti landscape is characterised by vast stretches of savannah interspersed with acacia trees and riverine woodlands. Wildlife can be seen along the banks of the Mara River and visitors can view the annual spectacle of the half a million migrating wildebeest from July to August. Visitors can look forward to bird watching, hot air ballooning, game safaris and guided bush walks.

When is the best time to visit?

Tanzania is great to visit all year round however there are typically heavy rains from mid March to late May.

From December to mid-March, the days are hot and sunny, usually with clear skies.

For nature lovers, the Great Migration takes place from July to December (typically) but there is great game viewing all year round.
