Tarangire Overview

Tarangire National Park is a relatively undiscovered national park in Tanzania's Manyara Region and host to Tanzania’s largest elephant population. The name of the park originates from the Tarangire River that crosses the park and is the primary source of fresh water for animals in the Tarangire Ecosystem during the annual dry season. The Tarangire Ecosystem is defined by the long-distance migration of wildebeest and zebras. During the dry season thousands of animals including wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, eland, lesser and greater kudu as well as predators such as lion, leopard and hyena concentrate in Tarangire National Park from the surrounding wet-season dispersal and calving areas.

The park covers an area of approximately 2,850 square kilometers (1,100 square miles) and the landscape is composed of granitic ridges, river valleys, and swamps. The breathtaking scenery is dotted with a mix of Acacia woodland, Combretum woodland, seasonally flooded grassland, and baobab trees.

For nature lovers, the Great Migration takes place from July to December (typically) but there is great game viewing all year round.
